Our hearts and prayers are with the families in France and in Israel whose loved ones were murdered. The battle against evil transcends time and hearkens back to the Torah. When Yaakov runs from his brother Esau, he fears for his life. As we read in next week's Torah portion, he prepares in three ways: prayer, diplomacy and war. We pray that in the wake of the horrific events in Israel and France, the world unites in the face of our common enemy.
In this spirit, I share a prayer from Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, the Chief Rabbi of England
Our Father in Heaven, the Supreme King of Kings.
We come before You today in prayer and supplication following the heinous terrorist attacks carried out in France, which were an assault on our civilization, on our freedom and on the democratic values that underpin our society.
We pray for the souls of the 129 innocent men, women and children, whose lives were mercilessly extinguished as they enjoyed leisurely weekend pursuits. We pray for the speedy and full recovery of the hundreds who were injured. And we pray for the numerous families whose worlds have been destroyed.
May all within our societies grow to love truth, uphold justice and value life, as it is written:
I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses; therefore choose life, that you may live, you and your families.
As those who wantonly murder and terrorize the innocent desecrate your Holy name, we ask You to protect all those who love and pursue peace from the scourge of terror.
Endow the perpetrators of evil with a new heart, as it is written,
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
O Lord, keep us safe and secure. Spread the tabernacle of Your peace upon all the dwellers on Earth.
May we share good news in the week ahead. Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
