Shabbat Shalom
One letter tells a story. As we begin Genesis this week, God adds one seemingly extra letter to the text to highlight the purpose of humanity. Following every day of creation the Torah states, "Day One, Day Two" etc. but following the sixth day, the Torah adds the letter heh, a definite article, to signify "The Sixth Day." Why the anomaly?
Rashi explains that the physical world is secondary to the spiritual world. The extra letter connects the original sixth day to the 6th of Sivan, a date in history when God revealed the Torah to the Jewish people. The purpose of humanity can only be fulfilled when guided by the eternal moral verities of the Torah. The extra letter serves as an affirmation of Torah's role as a bridge for humanity between Heaven and Earth.
As we move beyond the high holiday season, there is no better way to perpetuate our spiritual stirrings than through consistent Torah study. Thank God, we offer a full array of classes. Visit our website for more information. I urge everyone to also join us this Wednesday evening for the first in our series with Dena Block. She is an outstanding Torah teacher as I can attest from my daughters who studied with her at Maayanot Yeshiva High School for Girls.
We are looking forward to a vibrant fall of learning with classes and new innovative programming.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Found If you left your Succos Artscroll Machzor in the Chapel, please see Matt to claim it.
Welcome Back! Yona, Tzvi, Mia, Ezra, & Gavi Goldman. We're happy to see you in Stamford!
Father Son minyan is ON this week, Sunday at 9:15 AM. Light breakfast served ALL are welcome.
Esrogim Guidelines Esrogim that grew on Jewish-owned lands in Israel during the Sabbatical year are endowed with a special holiness known as "kedushas shevi'is". The following guidelines apply:
  • After Succos it is permitted to cook an esrog to create esrog-jam.
  • On the first of Sh'vat (January 11, 2016) the mitzvah of "biur" comes into effect for esrogim. This means that before or on that date any esrogim or esrog-jam which remains edible must be (a) returned to Eretz Yisroel and (b) declared hefker/ownerless. If the esrog is shriveled or inedible at that point, there is no need to perform biur.
  • If you have questions, please contact Rabbi Cohen.
