Shabbat Shalom The world is in turmoil. I received an email this past week from a congregant which weighs heavily on my mind and should on all of ours. The person wrote, "Where is the outrage among the leadership in the larger American Jewish community? No one seems to have any guts. Poorly attended rallies, no march on DC. Yes we pray, yes we give tzedakah and we visit Israel but why does the Jewish community feel so disconnected. Have we all become more connected to our own wired worlds during the week than we are to one another? It's an important question. We as individuals and as a community must fight through the psychological conditions that cause apathy and turn it into positive action. Our history as Jews tells us, that we should not get too comfortable, even in America." I believe we will see a more peaceful day. God promises our ancestors we will inherit the land of Israel. We believe with complete faith in the coming of the Messiah and redemption. Yet, now more than ever, the struggle for truth and peace looms large. Infighting among Jews bolsters our enemies. We must unite and do our best to be engaged on all fronts. Please take a moment to explore the links and article below. The tide will turn when we are all fully mobilized. If you would like to find ways to be more engaged in supporting Israel, please reach out to me. There are many opportunities. CAS Announcements - CAS ANNUAL THANKSGIVING FEAST FOR STAMFORD EMS CREWS Our Men's Club is hard at work organizing the CAS yearly show of appreciation to our local EMS Crews - a full Thanksgiving feast served to them at their station houses! Donations are needed for the food & Volunteers are needed to help: Thursday (11/26): 9:00 -11:30 AM - Meet at CAS to warm, cook, carve, pack up, & transport all of the prepared food to the EMS main station house. Thursday (11/26): 12:00 - 1:30 PM - Present and serve a full Thanksgiving feast to our city's Emergency Service workers. Everyone is encouraged to come out & take part in this genuine expression of appreciation to our local Stamford EMS crews. From Rabbi Cohen | CAS ROSALIE ABERMAN TEEN ADVOCACY FELLOWSHIPS FOR ISRAEL A SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY Be one of fifteen teens to be selected for a free trip to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee Policy Conference, March 20-22, 2016 in Washington DC. The trip will include registration, travel and hotel and the winners will join the Agudath Sholom AIPAC delegation. The participants will also be required to attend the Stamford JCC Speak Up for Israel program. To be one of the fifteen selected, submit a 500 word essay: "WHY DOES AIPAC NEED YOU?" If you could lobby the members of Congress on Capitol Hill, what would you say? What case would you present about the issues affecting the United States and Israel? Essays will be evaluated by a local and national panel of AIPAC supporters. Submit to Rabbi Cohen by Sunday, October 25th, 2015 at rabbicohen@cas-Open to 9th-12th graders from CAS. - LINKING GENERATIONS OF THE SHOAH-Our 2nd Generation Group began in July 2012. We are a group of approximately fifty members ranging in age from 40 and up and we come from all over CT and Westchester County. Our monthly meetings take place in Westport, CT (usually at the UJA offices) every second Tuesday of the month. Spouses of 2G members as well as 3rd Generation often attend our general meetings. Rabbi Elchanan Zohn, founder of the National Association of Chevra Kadishas and the foremost expert on taharas and Jewish burial practices, will be at Congregation Agudath Sholom on Sunday morning, November 8th, from 9AM-12 noon to conduct a three-hour training program on the proper way to perform a tahara. The session is appropriate as a refresher course for those who have performed taharas in the past, as well as those beginners who want to learn more about this important Jewish ritual.
