It is even more than 613. What do we commemorate and celebrate on the holiday of Shavuot? What is the historic relevance to today? I grew up in an observant home. Keeping kosher was not a question and walking to shul on Shabbat was the norm. Yet, it was only later on in life that I began to more fully appreciate the role of a Jew. At the birth of our nation, God enjoins Abraham to be a blessing to the world and bring Heaven down to Earth. Abraham devoted his life to bearing and sharing the name of God. On Shavuot, we pledge to carry this responsibility for all generations. In the preamble to the revelation at Mt. Sinai, God declares for perpetuity, "You will be for me kingdom of priests and a holy nation." The covenant as Sinai is our history. The covenant as Sinai is our destiny. The Torah is our timeless guide to realizing our Divine mission. We are blessed this Shabbat and Shavuot to be joined by Rabbi Aaron and Malka Rakeffet. It is truly an honor and privilege to host a couple who embrace their role as lights unto our people. Moving to Israel in 1969, the Rakeffets sought to impact the future of Israel and Jews worldwide through the power of teaching Torah. Rabbi Rakeffet has taught thousands of students. As a student of Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik and possessing a doctorate in Jewish history, his mind and soul, spirit and humility, humor and authenticity have captivated me, my brother, my father and myriads of students for over fifty years. He had many opportunities to change professions but he always felt he was and is a teacher of Torah. His joy and nachas are his family and his students. I was and remain inspired by his life and words. This past Tuesday night, we shared dinner together. We were joined by Diane and two of our girls. I asked Rabbi Rakeffet to reflect on his and Malka's role as agents of the Mossad in the 1980's to travel from Israel to teach Torah to refuseniks in Russia. To this day, I remember him telling me when I was his student in Israel in 1990 that his role in the former Soviet Union was a moment in life he truly sensed his Divine mission. In that role, he and Malka lived the historic mission of Abraham and Sara. After regaling our girls with stories of refuseniks , their travels and sacrifices to educate a lost generation of Jews he told the girls - "Remember one thing. You only live once. Do something big with your life." I hope and pray that all of our daughters live with this ideal every day. These words embody the essence of Shavuot. Study the Torah. Observe the Mitzvoth. Always Remember the Goal. Be a Blessing to the World. We only live once. Let us do something big with our lives. The Rakeffets surely have and so must we. Your voices were heard! I am happy to announce that in the beginning of June, the kosher butcher will return to the Fairway Market. I am grateful to Fairway management for their reconsideration. We hope with your help, the reopening will be a win win for Fairway and the kosher consumer community. Here are the details. The butcher and mashgiach will be present three days a week - likely Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. The store will also be reverting back to the original meat supplier Teva and not Shor Habor which is currently being used. Refrigerated rotisserie chickens will be available daily. I will remain in close contact with company management during the next few months as they evaluate the success of kosher meat market. Please be in touch if you have ongoing suggestions and most importantly, please do your best to support the store in the weeks and months ahead. G-d willing, together we will insure the growth of kashrut in our community for many years ahead.
