We would add a few beats, improvise and raise our voices in song. To this day, we when get together, we look to recreate the joy of the music and in our own homes revel in the ruach. Beyond Shabbat, we also always sang at our sedarim. From start to finish, the tunes evoke laughter, family, joy and spirit. I am sure we all possess such memories. More than the Torah, we never forget the positive experiences and feelings. The notion of song on Shabbat and holidays is rooted in an idea and practice from this week's Torah portion. Every Shabbat table is graced with salt. Why? The source is in Vayikra. G-d states "You shall salt every meal offering with salt. You may not discontinue the salt of your G-d's covenant from upon your meal offering - one ever offering you shall offer salt." We use salt as a reminder that our tables are altars. We dip our challah in the salt at the outset of every meal. The practice highlights that eating is not simply as a gastronomic experience but rather as Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik explains as a covenantal meal. He writes, "Our meals and in particular the seder celebrate the fellowship of generations, those living, those who have passed on, and those yet unborn." Our meals are intended to create community, deepen our commitment to Torah and unlock our spiritual potential. Whether through singing, blessings, reflection, Torah or tasty food, our Shabbat meal and holiday meals are opportunities to forge "symposium of generations" and memories of a lifetime. How are our tables like altars? How do we elevate a mundane meal into, as Rabbi Soloveitchik expressed so eloquently, "a charismatic community connected to a glorious past, a covenant, Torah..hopes and visions and to the great future and the realization of the Messianic kingdom"? Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and Joyous Rosh Chodesh, Rabbi Daniel Cohen
