Shabbat Shalom What do we want our reputation to be? This week in the news we have seen examples of the truism that a reputation is built over a lifetime but one moral indiscretion destroys one. Thousands of years, before social media, Ethics of Our Fathers taught, "Do not say something we do not want to be heard for in the end it will be heard." No action is private. Every choice reflects our past and determines our future. In this past week's Man Up class with fathers and sons, we discussed the importance of possessing a shem tov, a good name. Becoming a man means becoming a mensch and understanding the impact of our actions. One fafher shared the following life lesson and inspiring example. "When I was around 10 or 11, one day a friend and I decided that, as a joke, we would come up to an old woman who we saw walking in the neighborhood and pretend to ask her silly things that she couldn't possibly understand and know the answer to. The woman was hard of hearing and frail and her confusion about our questioning was (embarrassingly) amusing to us so we kept making fun of her. Unbeknownst to me, one of our neighbors saw this encounter and made my parents aware. My parents were flabbergasted and made two important points that I remember to this day: 1. They asked me how would I like it if some kids treated my own grandmother (with whom I was very close and who also was frail and hard of hearing) the way I treated this woman 2. When I behave in this manner I not only ruin my own reputation but the reputation of my parents and the entire family As punishment, I had to purchase a few dozen roses from my allowance and stand by the neighborhood supermarket (purposely a public location) all afternoon handing out individual flowers to every older person I saw." A lesson learned and never forgotten. What do want our reputation to be? How do our actions reflect on our family, community and God? G-d willing, we will choose a path of morality, courage and righteousness and be the light unto the nations we are destined to be.
