Shabbat Shalom What is the Jewish approach to the increased security questions facing our shul and other organizations in a time of increased global terror and anxiety? Does Judaism offer guidelines for managing risk? These questions emerge not only in debates about hiring armed guards for a shul but also when confronting possible surgeries, insurance, trips and risking one's life in many other arenas. What are the core values to consider? We must balance three competing principles. First, G-d commands us to guard our lives. We possess an obligation to do our best to protect ourselves and lead a heathy life. However, a second principle teaches that we are not to avoid all risk. The nature of life entails risk. Whether crossing a street or electing surgery for example, the extent of the risk vs. the benefit must be evaluated through the prism of Jewish law. Finally, we balance risk with faith in G-d that He protects and watches over us. The issue is complex and personal. Each circumstance merits deliberation. However, regardless of the outcome of the meeting this week we must heed one other principle. We are one community with variant opinions. Our debate is one of diverse ideas but as a family we must remember that everyone has the best interest of our shul at heart. G-d willing, we will continue to grow as shul in unity and address in peace the important challenges both physical and spiritual our generation faces. | Notice of Special Meeting for Members of Congregation Agudath Sholom Purpose: Review security needs of the synagogue and vote on instituting an additional membership security fee. Date and Time: February 4, 2015, 7:30 p.m. The sole purpose of this Special Meeting will be to discuss security at our synagogue and to vote upon instituting a security fee. If you cannot attend the Special Meeting in person, you may vote by proxy (either on-line or email). To avoid any potential invalidation of an improper proxy, please use the official proxy ballot on our website and return it to the synagogue office by noon, February 4th. At the meeting, we will review the following four options - A paid armed guard present for up to six hours during morning serviceson Shabbat and Holidays-cost $150 per member family per year, payable March 1
- A paid unarmed guard present for up to six hours during morning serviceson Shabbat and Holidays-cost $100 per member family per year, payable March 1
- A volunteer program consisting of 20 CAS members (who will receive training by CSS, an organization specializing in security training).- cost one-time $25 per member family per year, payable March 1 plus volunteers to staff
- Implement the plan as approved by the CAS Board to improve security systems-NO ADDITIONAL COST TO THE MEMBERSHIP.

The JHS Judaica Library at the JCC is collecting children's books for ages pre-school to teens. We are a group of approximately fifty members ranging in age from 40 and up and we come from all over CT and Westchester County.
