Would we risk imprisonment or G-d forbid our lives? The question seems outlandish given our freedom today but one worth pondering in light of the upcoming holiday of Chanukah. Thousands of years ago, the Syrian Greeks attempted to extinguish the fire of Torah from our nation. They forbade observance of Shabbat, circumcision, the establishment of the new month and Torah study. The Greeks understood that a Jew without Judaism cannot survive. Yet, throughout history, whether in the times of Rabbi Akiva, the Shoah, or the former Soviet Union, we have demonstrated a unyielding devotion to the primacy of Torah. It is Torah that inspires, educates and fuels our future. In this spirit, I want to offer thanks and a challenge. First,Yasher Koach to the participants in this years MALT trip and Rabbi Tzvi Bernstein for his leadership. It was an extraordinary few days of learning and living Torah in Israel. Second, as we approach Chanukah, consider committing to a daily regimen of Torah study. We have a sacred obligation to engage in learning every day. Consider a selection from Ethics of our Fathers, an aliyah a day or one Halacha a day. Here are some resources: - http://www.dailyhalacha.com/

I invite you to join me as I embark on a new three year study cycle of Maimonides Mishneh Torah. We begin on Sunday and commit to one chapter a day. Click here to find the text If you would like to join me on the three year cycle, please email me and I will send you a calendar and resources. This effort is part of a popular new initiative in Israel and also started many years ago by the Lubavitcher Rebbe. http://www.mishnetorah.co.il/ http://www.chabad.org/news/article_cdo/aid/2789059/jewish/Worldwide-Celebration-Completing-Maimonides-Mishneh-Torah.htm We are blessed with the freedom to learn every day. As we celebrate Chanukah, let us celebrate not only through gifts but with a renewed appreciation to the primacy and vitality of Torah in our lives. Message from Cantor Bokow Dear Friends I am now the coordinator of the weekly leining (Torah reading) and what I have been working on is on streamlining the process of the leiners so that we are prepared as a shul with the leining without the last minute pressure of looking for a leiner. I have set up a rotation of "regulars" who have volunteered to assist us. The schedule is set up approximately 6-8 weeks in advance and allows those who lein to prepare the parsha for our benefit. Having said this, I strongly encourage those who wish to participate in the leining from time to time, even if it is just an aliyah or two to please do so. This is a wonderful opportunity to lein your bar-mitzvah parsha or aliyah for the shul. Please do so by contact me as EARLY as possible so that I may put your name on the schedule without having someone else on the schedule prepare needlessly. Looking forward to working with you this.
