As the Olympic opening ceremony begins in Sochi, all nations don their national colors and commentators opine on the styles. Each person represents a country and mission. What is the function of clothing in Judaism?

   R. Samson Raphael Hirsch (1808-88) notes in an essay on the bigdei kehunah, the topic of Parshat Tetzaveh, that clothing not only impacts the person wearing it, but impacts those who see the person wearing the clothing. It represents our values and mission. In essence, there is no "business casual" in the Temple. What do we wear on Shabbat that distinguishes our dress from during the week? What do we wear to shul to signify the sanctity of the space? Regardless of where we are, how do we project our values and mission as a light unto the nations and an inspiration for our children?

On another note, please join me this Thursday at the JCC for an enlightening and stimulating lunch and conversation with cancer researcher Dr. Osnat Ashur Fabian. We met her on our Israel mission and her story and message are heartwarming and trailblazing.

Finally, if you have not yet made plans to join over 40 CAS members in Washington DC for AIPAC's Policy Conference on March 2-4, arguably the three most important days of the year for American-Israeli relations, please consider doing so. Click here to register for the AIPAC Conference and use code "PC14CAS" to save $100 off your registration if you sign up by February 9th. Here is my video on what it is like to attend.

ADULT EDUCATION SURVEY
Make your interests known!  Our congregation has been specially selected to participate in the first ever national pilot study that directly asks Orthodox adults to share their views about adult education. Your opinions are important whether or not you actually take or are currently engaged in any courses. Ellen Cohn is conducting this research for her doctoral dissertation at Yeshiva University. The survey will also enable us to learn more about our congregants and to better meet your needs. The survey, which is totally anonymous, takes between 10 to 15 minutes.
This is your opportunity to make your voice heard. Please click the link below to take the survey. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Ellen directly at EllenSCohn@gmail.com.

Volunteers Needed

PARTNERS IN TORAH

Looking for a few good men and women to be a mentor for Partners in Torah:  http://www.partnersintorah.org/30 minutes can change a life. If you are interested in serving as a mentor for Partners in Torah or might consider this wonderful mitzvah, please be in touch with Rabbi Cohen.

COMMUNITY CHESED HELPERS

An important role of the Chesed committee is outreach to the Shul's elderly and homebound, who are often isolated and lack a lifeline to our synagogue. We are asking for volunteers, from our congregation, willing to reach out to these members to offer an ear, identify areas of need, make a visit, or offer a ride to a doctor's appointment. Even small gestures mean a great deal and do not take much time.  If you would like to volunteer, please contact Vivian Weiss at 203-323-0909 or vivianweiss@gmail.com. If you are aware of any elderly or homebound shul members in need of outreach, please notify Rabbi Cohen.

WELCOME TO OUR SYNAGOGUE PROGRAM

As you know, every Shabbat we station ushers at the doors in the sanctuary to welcome people, assist them and enhance the dignity of the service. In an effort to create an even warmer environment, we are expanding the usher roles to include a greeter in the lobby from 9-10:30 am. Please join the usher team. We need you and your smile. To find out more and sign up, contact Mitchell Bell.
