  It is not uncommon to read the ingredients or caloric content of food before consumption. We look for healthy options (most of the time). Yet, Rabbi Isaac Luria reminds us of another way to truly unlock the power of food to provide nourishment for the body and soul. Based on the verse in the week's portion of Eikev, "Man does not live by bread alone but by the word of G-d, " he derives that the recitation of blessings before we eat actually enhances the ability of the food, originally created by the Almighty, to sustain us. Take a moment to review the blessings: http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/90551/jewish/Texts-of-Blessings-Before-Eating.htm Pause before you eat. Thank G-d and discover the true potential in every bite. (Of course, you should also recite the blessings after eating!)

HOST ISRAELI VIPS THURSDAY AUGUST 8 THROUGH SUNDAY AUGUST 11

 

You helped the Widows and Orphans of the IDF this spring by letting local kids wash (ahem) your cars in the parking lot.

 

Now, here's your chance to host some 12- and 13-year-olds who are beneficiaries of that Israeli charity. A delegation of 44 children, each of whom has lost a parent in military, police or firefighting units in Israel, have been attending a Jewish summer camp in Wisconsin for the last few weeks, as they prepare for the communal bar/bat mitzvah they will be celebrating with Israel's top brass on September 16 in the Old City. These 24 girls and 20 boys and their dozen chaperones will soon be going home the long way -- through Chicago, Stamford and Montreal - and are in need of housing in our community from Thursday evening,  August 8 (around 6 pm) through Sunday morning, August 11.

 

Because the group is sightseeing in Manhattan all day Friday and leaving for Canada early Sunday, there is hardly any time on the ground here for host families to entertain the children, other than Friday night and Saturday. But we know you will make the most of every minute, and you can count on a backyard dessert and swim party at the Bodurtha home after Shabbat Saturday night for all host families and their charges to make things easier. (Main Event has promised to cater.)

Please consider taking a group of children. Families who stepped up last year really had a remarkable experience, as did the children, one reason why Stamford is back as a host city this year. 

 

Because these VIP's are first-time travellers, the charity asks volunteering families to accept groups of 4 or more.

 

We would also be especially grateful to hear from volunteers who speak Arabic, since 4 of the children are Druze. They can get by in Hebrew, but would obviously feel far more at home among us if they were able to converse in a language that they were more comfortable speaking.
