| | | Have you recited the daily blessing for Torah today? The Talmud (Nedarim 71) quotes Rav Yehuda, who attributes the destruction of the Temples to failure to recite the blessing prior to Torah study. How do we understand his radical statement? Sources suggest the exile from Jerusalem occurred for violation of the three cardinal sins as well as baseless hatred. Rabbi Eliyahu Lapian explains that the omission of the blessing reflected a devaluing of Torah. In the minds of the Jews, the Torah was unworthy of a blessing; it lacked priority in their lives. In this context, the other sins are commentary. At the end of our lives, G-d asks whether we had set aside time for Torah study and also, did the Torah define our lives. It is a searing question not only when we leave this world but today and everyday. Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Daniel Cohen |

Summer Flicks at CAS Join Rabbi Walk for these features. Showtimes 7:30 pm, Wednesdays. No charge! July 17-The Jazz Singer (the original 1927 Al Jolson version) The Jazz Singer is a 1927 American musical film depicting the fictional story of Jakie Rabinowitz, a young man who defies the traditions of his devout Jewish family. After singing popular tunes in a beer garden he is punished by his father, a cantor, prompting Jakie to run away from home. Some years later, now calling himself Jack Robin, he has become a talented jazz singer. He attempts to build a career as an entertainer but his professional ambitions ultimately come into conflict with the demands of his home and heritage. The first feature-length motion picture with synchronized dialogue sequences, its release heralded the commercial ascendance of the talkies and the decline of the silent film era. The film is based on The Day of Atonement, a play by Samson Raphaelson. |

Elliot (Michael Buster), one of the students with a background in minor league baseball, is able to convince Charlie Jones (Brian Wimmer), a former major league player who had been imprisoned as a result of DUI convictions--and now has to perform almost 200 hours of community service--to coach the team. As he coaches the team, he gives the players "a new measure of skill and confidence," as they help him regain his self-respect.
