Welcome to our Youth Shabbat!

Apart from the blizzard, this is a very special Shabbat, as you can see from the various titles above. Not only is it the Shabbat before Rosh Chodeh (Adar commences with the recitation of maariv Saturday night) but it is also Shabbat Shekalim, a commemoration of the very first tax levied upon the Jewish people, both as a way to finance the Mishkan, and, since the same amount was contributed by rich and poor alike, as a way of indirectly counting the Jewish people.

Of course, if Rosh Chodesh Adar is motzei Shabbat, that means that Purim is only 2 weeks away! Liat Karsch and Vered Links have done a fabulous job planning this year's PURIM SEUDAH AND FAMILY GAME NIGHT (details on back page.) Please sign up immediately after Shabbat so we can send fewer email reminders!

Purim brings to mind our youth. The ongoing vitality of a shul can be measured by the involvement of its younger members. Although the Junior Congregation Shabbaton and the BMC wings night have been postponed,  any children who were scheduled to participate in the Youth Shabbat services either by davening or delivering divrei Torah, are still welcome to do so. We also hope to give a rousing nesiah tovah to Rabbi Walk, Rabbi Israel, Sima Broza, the B'not Sheirut Roni & Daniella, and most of all, the 18 eighth grade members of our congregation who are embarking on the BCDS Israel Experience 2013 this week!

Finally, make plans to attend next week's Yakar Shabbat. There will be Carlebach-style davening Friday night and both minyanim will join together at 10 am for a special breakfast Kiddush (and I do mean special!) followed by your choice of four speakers on varied Purim topics (see back for details.)   Mishenichnas Adar!

                                                                          Shabbat Shalom.

      Stay safe and warm,

                                                                          Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Eruv Update
Our eruv has been inspected prior to Shabbat - as it is every Shabbat-and was found usable and whole. Due to the great work of the eruv committee under the leadership of Arthur Smith, our eruv is very resilient and has shown time and time again that it withstands all kinds of wind, rains and other natural phenomena. After Sandy, which carried with it much stronger winds (gusts and sustained), there was barely any damage to the eruv infrastructure.
Although the eruv is usable this Shabbat , please proceed with caution. While I always encourage synagogue attendance, please know that personal safety takes precedence. I hope to see you in shul only if you are not in any way placing yourself in danger by coming.
