Torah and Light

What is the secret of Jewish continuity?

I believe it emerges from deepening our commitment to God via Torah and to each other via a smile.

First, the Greeks understood the secret of Jewish continuity. For this reason, they sought to Hellenize the Jewish people. Unlike Purim, where Haman sought to annihilate the Jewish people, Anitochus attempted to assimilate our people into oblivion. He forbade the observance of Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh, circumcision and, most importantly, the study of Torah. He understood that the future of the Jewish people was intrinsically bound to Torah learning and living. If we do not know who we are as Jews, we will never realize our mission of creating a world infused with ethical monotheism and the light of God.

The symbol of the dreidel embodies the centrality of Torah. Can you imagine being told that you were, God forbid, subject to death for studying Torah. What would you do? Would Torah study be worth the risk? Thousands of years ago, rather than perceive the decree as a vacation from school, the young children played dreidel as a ruse to mask their study of Torah. It meant so much to them and their families, it was so much a part of their lives and development, that they could not fathom a world devoid of Jewish education.

Torah is the fuel for our future.

Secondly, we light candles for Shabbat and Chanukah. What is the take away from the flames of these candles?

I learned from my parents it is our responsibility to keep the flame alive and spread it - to keep the fire burning brightly.

One of my father's close friends - Geoff Frisch, of blessed memory - lived this idea. He was a successful businessman, but saw life's experiences as a series of opportunities. He said: "I am not concerned whether someone buys from me or not, but whether we are connected as two human beings. If I can make someone smile or make a difference in someone's life, then regardless of the material benefit, I know that I am living for eternity."

With God's help, we will all make the world an even brighter place.

Shabbat Shalom, Happy Chanukah and God willing good news from Israel in the days ahead,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

CAS Youth News
It's Chanukah time! And, of course, our theme of being a source of light in the world is connected perfectly to both the holiday and the Parsha. Last week we saw that no matter how difficult the situation was for Yosef, he never lost faith in G-d and never wavered in his values. This week, we see the payoff - by staying true to who Yosef truly was, he was able to gain the trust even of Pharaoh himself, and achieved the unthinkable position of second in command of the whole empire. This put Yosef in a position to help people and spread the light of goodness. Just like Yosef, in the Chanukah story, the Jewish People fought to stay true to Torah. Chanukah is about emunah and resilience. Light comes out of the darkness. We show our pride in being Jewish by lighting the menorah where everyone can see, and stand proud as Jewish people! In groups this week, we'll be giving out chocolate coins, singing Chanukah songs, and learning the stories of Yosef and of Chanukah!
Questions for your Shabbat Table
  • What can we learn from Yosef about staying hopeful and doing the right thing, even when things are really hard?
  • How is Yosef's story similar to the story of Chanukah and the menorah lasting for eight days?
  • Yosef used his gift of interpreting dreams to help others, even in prison. What special gifts or talents do you have, and how can you use them to help people?
  • How can you be a source of light in the darkness in the world?

Parent Child Learning is on break this week and will continue next week at new time 6:15-7:15.

Never Give Up: The Lights of Chanukah

What do the Chanukah flames signify to you? Many years ago I asked one of my daughters this question and she responded, "The light of Chanukah signifies spirit and hope!"

Have you ever tried counting the stars in the sky? In Bereshit, God promises Abraham that the Jewish people will someday be as numerous as the stars in the sky. G-d enjoins Abraham to try and count the stars to see if he can quantify them knowing full well that the task is impossible. How can we count the infinite?

The answer emerges from the story of Yosef and the story of the Maccabees.

Yosef languishes in the pit. According to the Zohar, he composed in the depths of his despair the words, "Although I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for you are with me." It is the inspiration for David's famous Psalm 23. Yosef emerges, faces further challenges, but ultimately becomes the second in command to Pharaoh.

Imagine if the Maccabees had abandoned hope of defeating the mighty Greek army. Their battle was against all odds, yet they never lost hope. Possessing deep faith and courage, they dreamed the impossible. As Ethics of Our Fathers states, "It is not up to us to finish the task but we are not free to desist from trying."

G-d's command to count the stars implanted within Jews of all generations the spiritual audacity to dream and realize the impossible. Throughout our history, we are called upon to maintain our faith in the eternality of the Jewish people and serve as G-d's partners in realizing our destiny.

One of my most moving Chanukah experiences was in Yerushalayim when I accompanied a small group on a walking tour of the Western Wall tunnels. Although I had walked these steps before, I experienced an eternal moment. My soul stirred as I gazed into the flames of the Chanukiah burning only yards away from the original Menorah lit on the Temple mount. Thousands of years later, the flame burns brightly,so close to the kindling of the flame by the Maccabees thousands of years ago.

The first flame ignites our dreams of transforming the impossible into the possible for the Jewish people. The reading of the Prophets on Chanukah echoes this theme. In stirring the Jews to rebuild the Temple after the Babylonian exile, Zechariah proclaims, "Not by might and not by power but by Spirit" will we realize our dreams.

How can we ignite the impossible for the Jewish people? What will we do to hasten the coming of the Messiah? How will the lights of Chanukah motivate us to count the stars in the sky?

Share your inspiration! Email me what the flames signify to you.

Wishing you and your family a Shabbat Shalom and happy Chanukah! With blessings and God willing good news from Israel,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

CAS Youth News
CAS Youth Group Update  We continue to approach Chanukah with our theme, being a source of light in the world and connected to the Parsha. No matter how difficult the situation was for Yosef, he never lost faith in God and never wavered in his values. The Chashmonaim fought to practice their faith and stayed true to Torah. Chanukah is about messages of faith and resilience, light emerges from darkness. We demonstrate our pride in being Jewish by lighting the menorah publicly. We will explore other ways to stand proud as Jews. For a fun activity this week in groups, we will make our own edible multicolored coats out of wholesome snacks… and then eat them, of course!
Questions for your Shabbat Table
  1. What can we learn from Yoseph about staying hopeful and doing the right thing, even when things are really hard?
  2. How is Yoseph's story similar to the story of Chanukah and the menorah lasting for eight days?
  3. Yoseph used his gift of interpreting dreams to help others, even in prison. What special gifts or talents do you have, and how can you use them to help people?
