Happy Chuankuah!
Thank you very much for your warm wishes and words of condolence on the passing of my beloved grandmother, Claire Umansky at 101. She leaves a legacy, thank God, of grandchildren and great grandchildren. We were very blessed and eternally grateful for all of her love, wisdom, honesty, zest for life and faith. Here is a link to the eulogy I shared in tribute to her - The Splendor of her Soul.
She will always be a part of us and we will miss her so much. May we share happy occasions together soon.
The upcoming holiday of Chanukah reflects many core values of our faith. We celebrate God's providence in our lives, the miraculous in the common and the triumph of light over darkness. We go to parties, eat latkes, spin the dreidel, share gifts and light the menorah.
Yet, we cannot forget that the study of Torah and observances of Shabbat in particular embody the timeless message of the victory. The Greeks attempted to wipe out our faith. They prohibited Torah, circumcision, Shabbat, kashrut practices by penalty of death. Rather than succumb, the Maccabees risked their lives to fight for religious freedom. There is no better way to celebrate the holidays than to recommit ourselves to Torah and Mitzvot.
In this spirit, I urge you to increase Torah study during the 8 days. Go online or attend a class. Join us on Sunday morning, December 13th for our morning of learning with Rabbi Tzvi Sobolofsky, an outstanding Torah scholar. Information and sign up are here. Strengthen Jewish identity and join us for Lights Across Stamford to spread the spirit of the holiday.
May the lights and joy of Chanukah this year arouse God and all of us to insure the triumph of light over darkness in the world and may we merit a time of peace, faith and the miraculous speedily in our days.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and Happy Chanukah
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Join Rabbi Cohen and other pre-Bar Mitzvah fathers and seventh grade boys to discuss what our tradition teaches us about becoming a man. Each session will cover a unique aspect of a Bar Mitzvah's new responsibilities in the world, and Rabbi Cohen will bring relevant sources to stimulate discussion. The three topics will be: (1) who am I, and what are my responsibilities as an individual? (2) who am I, and what are my responsibilities in my family? (3) who am I, and what are my responsibilities in my local community, Jewish people and the world? This is a great opportunity for fathers and sons to bond and grow in preparation for their Bnai Mitzvah. Final Bonus will be dinner at 613.
