L'Shana Tova/Shabbat Shalom

The summer of 2014 was marked by conflict and tragedy in the land of Israel. We were horrified by the kidnapping and murder of three Israel teens Naftali Fraenkel, Gilad Shaer and Eyal Yifrah. We were mortified by the abduction and killing of Mohammed Abu Khdeir.

Yet, despite all of the challenges I find hope. As Racheli Frankael shared in reflecting on the life of her son, "We will earn how to sing without you. We'll always hear your voice inside." As Jews, we remain resolute and hopeful. We realize Jewish history ebbs and flows from sorrow to joy but believe in the ultimate redemption and peace on earth.

During these months, we learned about the nature of prayer. God sometimes answers "no". With humility, Racheli Frankael expressed, "God doesn't work for us, we work for Him -- and we can't, and likely never will fathom how this outcome squares with His goodness, but we are charged to live with the contradiction.

We also gained a glimpse into the road to redemption. For 18 days, we came together as a people rarely seen in recent years. From secular to religious, here and abroad, we came together as community and nation. The moment of unity cannot be lost. We gathered at the JCC to pray across denominational lines for Israel. May we gather in joy. The heartfelt expressions of gratitude from the Israeli families to Jews all over the word spoke to the depth of our unified spirit. We learned to care for Jews we had not known and realize our responsibility to door best day in and day out to foster achdut - brotherhood in our shul, community, nation and world.

The feeling was best expressed by Rabbi Jacob Schacter at our annual Mikvah event when he described the ideal of "We are Mishpacha" In my mind, the phrase captures one of our core values as a shul. We are family. In this spirit, I ask you to consider joining some of our initiatives for the coming year:

  1. High Holiday Food Drive and Chesed Opportunities
  2. AIPAC Shabbat on November 22nd and AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington DC www.aipac.org-Be a part of the CAS 100
  3. Sukkot and Shabbat Across Agudath sponsored by Sisterhood on Shabbat, October 11 and March 14, 2015
  4. Shabbat Across Stamford - March, 2015
  5. CAS Israel Family Trip in 2015 (click here for details)

The strength of our community and people emerges from the bonds of our Mishpacha. G-d willing, this coming year will be filled with tidings of peace in Israel and we will be blessed in our shuls and families with a year of health, joy and the inscription in the book of Life!

Shanah Tovah and Shabbat Shalom,

  • THANK YOU FROM ISRAEL BONDS It was wonderful to come together as a community on September 21 at the Israel Bonds breakfast to support the State of Israel. We had the privilege to hear from Middle East Strategic and Economic Expert Ambassador Yoram Ettinger who spoke about the role Israel plays in fighting the Free World's battles. As we approach the High Holidays, we begin to think of how to strengthen ourselves, our families and our community. Part of that community is the State of Israel and one of the best ways to show your solidarity with Israel is to buy Israel bonds, starting at $100, or $36 online, and to become a stakeholder in one of the world's most resilient and innovative economies. If you were unable to attend the event and have not yet invested in 2014, please call Cynthia Blustein at 914-713-9003 or cynthia.blustein@israelbonds.com to be part of the Agudath Sholom campaign. Bonds can be purchased for your portfolios, as bar/bat mitzvah gifts, or for your IRA pension funds. For current rates and prospectuses or to buy a bond online, visit www.israelbonds.com. We are grateful for you standing with Israel through support of Israel Bonds. Together we can show the world we are proud advocates for Israel and confident in its limitless future.
