A Yearbook Message and Parshat Naso

Sometimes we hear a message that we never forget. Like most high school seniors, I remember asking my friends to sign my yearbook and vice versa. It is a rite of passage before graduation. One of my teachers, Rabbi Shlomo Freundlich, inscribed my yearbook with a Dvar Torah and a blessing, one which I frequently remember. In reflecting on the Parsha of Naso and its confluence with Memorial Day, the message resounded even louder and broader.

He shared with me an insight from the tractate of Yoma (86a). The Rabbis ask how it is possible for God to command us to love him, as it states in the Torah, "You should love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul and might." God can command an action, but how can he legislate an emotion?

The Talmud answers by explaining that the verse is teaching us not only to love God, but to make God's name beloved through your way of life. When a Jew acts in a way that is honest, kind, faithful and good, he/she causes mankind to come closer to God. My Rabbi offered me a blessing to inspire me and all of us to exemplify Godliness in our lives to, God willing, be a source of inspiration to others to lead such lives as well. Not a single one of us is exempt from this awesome and sacred task. Whether at home, business, recreation or any day, time or place, we are all role models for God. This mission energizes and animates my life.

This idea underscores a central theme in Naso. The midrash states that the Kohanim should bless the people of Israel just as God said to Avraham, "You shall be a blessing." (Bereishit 12:2). First, why does God not bless us directly? Why the need for a Kohain to be the intermediary? Secondly, how does one become a blessing?

The answer draws on the Talmudic idea above. God can bring blessing to mankind, but it is man himself/herself who serves as a model for teaching mankind what blessing really means. We learn more from that which is caught, than what is taught. Our children, grandchildren and friends learn less from lectures than from exemplary models of living. God enjoins Avraham and all of us to not seek blessing, but be blessings. God tasks the Kohain, the teachers of Israel to fulfill their role through modeling a stellar and sacred way of life.

All of us are invested with the mission to lead lives which bring blessing to God and the world.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and God willing good news from Israel in the days ahead,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
