Shabbat Shalom

We are looking forward to hosting our Scholar in Residence this Shabbat, Rabbi Chaim Jachter. Rabbi Jachter will be speaking on the following four topics:

  • Character Counts - Family Friday Night Dinner
  • The Journey of an Ashkenazic Rabbi at a Sephardic Congregation - 7:30 PM
  • The Role of Beit Din - Shabbat morning sermon
  • Stories from Supervising Eruvin - Seudah Shlishit

We are also excited to welcome our visiting Sephardic Chazan - Ithamar Kashi.

I am pleased to share a new weekly feature "Parsha Icebreakers" to enhance your Shabbat table conversation and thank my son in law Yaakov Moshe, for developing them.

  1. Share an interaction that you thought would be very difficult but actually went very well (Yaakov meeting Esav).
  2. Share a time you stood up for a family member (Shimon and Levi wiping out Schem because of Dina).

Finally, my father shared with me a proud insight from one of his mentors at YU, Rabbi Jacob Rabinowitz, which shaped his life and in turn mine.

When the Biblical figure Jacob, in Parshat Vayishlach, faces a reunion with his brother, he is anxious about the impending meeting and prepares simultaneously for peace and war. He prays to the Divine for assistance by saying, "I am diminished from all of my kindnesses." He acknowledges that he may no longer be deserving of God's grace and asks for God's mercy. My father explained that Jacob lived with uncertainty. He never believed that he was owed anything by God. When we live with a sense of healthy insecurity, we relish life's blessings. How can we not be filled with gratitude?

Living with uncertainty is a key to living inspired. My father, may he live and be well, is one of the most grateful people I know. Whenever I ask him how he is doing, he responds, "Thank God!" with gusto. He sees every day with renewed mission and purpose.

Living inspired stems from an awareness that life can change in an instant. Take nothing for granted. We are not owed anything but are here by the grace of God. God willing, we all be inspired with this awareness each and every day.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
