Shabbat Shalom Joy in Serving Others: The Holiest Night of My Life I am blessed this Shabbat to welcome my father, Rabbi Herbert Cohen, and my stepmother, Meryl, who are visiting from Israel. It has been over a year since my father's double bypass surgery. Now a year later, I am grateful to God for his recovery and reflect on one of the holiest nights of my life. The days before his surgery were very unnerving as my father reflected on his mortality. I realized the importance of being with him during these fragile moments and I booked a flight to Jerusalem. He underwent surgery on a Sunday morning and I arrived in Israel after an eleven hour flight on Monday afternoon. Within minutes of my arrival, he left the Intensive Care Unit. Although I booked a hotel room near the hospital, upon entering the room, my father asked me to stay with him through the night. The next 24 hours would be some of the most tiring but inspiring moments of my entire life. My father's blood pressure dropped precipitously on a couple of occasions triggering emergency units, his body temperature cooled and every breath was arduous. I helped him with the most basic of tasks. I left the hospital for about one hour on Tuesday afternoon while my stepmother was with him to pray at the Western Wall. When I returned, my father, thank God, had stabilized and I traveled back to the airport and flew home to America. I was in the air more than I was on the ground. My body was exhausted but my soul was on fire. Growing up, I did my best to honor my parents and know I could have done more but I sensed my soul's joy in serving my father. The most stirring moment occurred in the middle of the night. My father asked me to rub his skin and soothe him. The touch evoked a childhood memory in me. I remembered vividly my father holding me as a child in the pool and I held him tight as he bounced me up and down and waded with me in the water. In that instant, I realized the sanctity of the night. Our roles were reversed. He cared for me as a child and now I cared for him. Thank God, he is blessed with his health. In the darkness of the night in Jerusalem, our souls intertwined. The gift of a parent's love for a child and in turn my respect and love for him, ignited a palpable feeling of joy and purpose which will live in me forever. The experience reinforced within me the counter intuitive role serving others plays in increasing inner happiness. As Francis of Asissi teaches, "For it is in the giving that we receive." Regardless of our faiths, we are all created with the Divine spark. This spark, our conscious, our souls, burns brighter and joy wells inside of us when we love another. We were created to serve. Last Sunday Father/Son Minyan until September Rabbi Daniel Cohen's Halacha of the Week - Milk and Meat - Question: If I eat hot pareve food that was made on meat equipment, is there a waiting period before I can eat dairy? For instance, if I ate vegetarian chili made in a meat pot, can I have ice cream for dessert?
Answer: If one eats pareve food that was cooked in a meat pot, one is not required to wait six hours before eating dairy. However, one may not eat this food together with dairy or reheat it in a dairy pot. For example, if one cooked spaghetti in a fleishig pot, he may eat cheese immediately after finishing the spaghetti. However, he may not eat the spaghetti with cheese or with other dairy products. You can have your ice cream for dessert. The spaghetti, though, should not be reheated in a milchig pot.

The Orthodox Union does not certify Honest Kids Goodness Grapeness fruit drink. This product is being sold in 6 ounce cartons that were placed in large bags that bear an unauthorized OU symbol. Corrective actions have been implemented. Israel Advocacy Update Our newly formed Israel Advocacy Task Force under the leadership of Ben Lanson held its first organizational meeting. CAS Announcements - CAS GARDEN Our next gardening session will be this Sunday, June 26th at 9:15am. We apologize for missing last week's session due to scheduling conflicts but we will be ready to tackle the garden this Sunday. We need about 4~5 adult gardeners. Community Chesed | 3 Square - Provide Summer Items for Kids In Need 3 square is a program of the Women's Philanthropy of United Jewish Federation. We provide supplemental nutrition to students in need in our community. Once a week, volunteers gather to shop, package and deliver food to 28 hungry children at Rogers School in Stamford. Our mission is to change lives by providing food for children at risk of going hungry over the weekend during the school year. Periodically the group gives special gifts to mark holidays and vacations. Summer vacation is fast approaching, and we would like to send the kids on their way with some goodies that they can most certainly use this summer, and won't be able to purchase on their own.
