The Power of Awe

The Jewish people literally and figuratively file Chapter 11 in this week's Torah portion. They are three days journey from Israel, the promised land. They are so close. Yet, the Torah records in Chapter 11 that the nation found pretexts for complaining. They get stuck spiritually; one travail leads to another culminating with the punishment to wander in the desert for another 38 years.

What was the cause of their spiritual bankruptcy? They failed the manna challenge. Although the manna could taste like any food, the Jewish people grew bored with it. Despite the awesome quality of the manna, the miracle became mundane.

Rabbi Noach Weinberg, of blessed memory, calls the antidote to such malaise, "the power of awe". No matter how routine a phenomenon, we must never lose our sense of wonder. The key to spirituality is not seeking another thrill or outside stimulation for inspiration but rather to see the world for all its beauty every day.

Rabbi Weinberg writes, "We have constant access to this quiet awesomeness. A spring walk through the forest. A babbling brook. Majestic music. A baby laughing. A heartbeat.

So why don't we feel this awe constantly? Because yesterday's novelty is today's boredom. Notice how little children find everything exciting and fascinating. But before long, they get used to what they have constant access to - people, places, ideas. And life just seems mundane.

Yet who says that growing up means becoming numb?

The shortcut to achieve awe is to go straight to the source. The real reason that the hurricane, flower, snow and music are so awesome, is because they reflect the eternal, transcendent force that we call God.

And if creation is this incredibly awesome, just imagine how awesome is the Creator Himself!

Consider what God does for you on a daily basis. God's personal intervention in our lives is awesome. Take time to notice it in your life. If you don't feel His presence, you are not in reality. The reality of this world, there is nothing mundane, dull or routine. We are touching infinity every moment of our lives.

Wishing you and your families an Awesome Shabbat and God willing good news from Israel in the days ahead,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

CAS Youth News
We wish Dovi and Rivkie Siderson  best wishes in the new journey and are eternally grateful for their investments in our youth. See Dovi's letter to our community

Dear Stamford family,

I am both excited and sad to share that this summer, I will be transitioning from my current role with NCSY in Stamford. While I am excited to continue working within our beautiful community, I wanted to take the time to explain how things will be changing, and to reflect on our time here together.

I have deeply enjoyed living and working in the Stamford Jewish community; living here has been a bright spot in my life. It is therefore very difficult to say goodbye, as Rivkie and I transition to our next chapter in Manhattan. On the Upper West Side, Rivkie will be working for the Manhattan Jewish Experience, and I will be attending Rabbinic and graduate classes at Yeshiva University.

As a result of our move to Manhattan, I can no longer be local with NCSY. However, I am thrilled to announce that I will be continuing on as the Director of JSU Connecticut, a new and exciting frontier for Jewish teens in CT.

The Jewish Student Union, or JSU, is a branch of NCSY which connects and inspires Jewish highschool students within school and beyond. Starting with Jewish culture clubs at local highschools, JSU opens Jewish spaces and connects Jewish teenagers with like-minded students at other schools. And, while JSU begins in school, it is by no means limited to it. Monthly social events, virtual and in-person learning opportunities, and three annual Shabbaton retreats will be the cornerstone of our JSU Connecticut community. Additionally, JSU Connecticut will prioritize providing information, opportunities, and financial aid for Israel summer experiences, accessible to all teens.

All teens are included in the JSU community, regardless of whether their school hosts JSU. Nonetheless, I recognize that in this transition, there are elements of local programming which require attention. Amongst these are Shabbat and Holiday programming, especially Teen Minyanim and Shabbat meals. In this regard, I am pleased to say that Rabbi Daniel Cohen of Agudath Sholom and Rabbi Gideon Black of NCSY are partnering to build a powerful and exciting program, which will, please God, integrate seamlessly with the JSU Connecticut community. The details and staffing of this program are set to be announced soon, and Rabbi Cohen and Rabbi Black are happy to discuss any questions you may have. They can be reached at rabbicohen@cas-stamford.org and black@ncsy.org.

For now, I wish you all, my Stamford family, the absolute best, and look forward to seeing you during the course of JSU programming. If you have any questions whatsoever, please do not hesitate to reach out. It's been a beautiful two years, and I can't wait for many more, please God!
