When did you become a Jew? Many were born into our faith and some converted but the question, albeit provocative, is relevant in light of one of my favorite comments of Rashi.  Moshe declares in this week's Torah portion: "This day, G-d commands you to perform the decrees" (26:16) although it is almost 40 years after the revelation at Mt. Sinai.  Rashi explains the discrepancy by suggesting that we should view every day as a renewal of the covenant at Sinai. How do we view our commitment to Judaism?  Do we practice out of convenience, culture or conviction?

One of the best guides to shed light on this question in a deeply personal way is
Path of the Just by Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto.  Join me for a three part series in this book on Tuesday mornings (August 27 at 9:15 am, September 3 at 8:15 am and September 10 at 8:15 am.)  A great tool for self-reflection is also this personal mission statement exercise and I invite you to set up an appointment for a review by sending me an email. I will be in shul Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of the coming week. Also, please enjoy and share this article on the Parsha of Ki Tavo: The Suprising Story Behind the World's Most Expensive Violin.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom from West Virginia (visiting my younger brother Benyamin and his wife, Elizabeth) and all the best.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Youth

Tot Shabbat, Mini Minyan & Jr. Cong. continue all summer long. B'nai Mitzvah Club for 6 & 7 graders resumes next week in the Cantor's office.

New this year is a registration requirement for groups. Registering your child is now a required safety protocol. This extra safety measure will ensure our leaders have pertinent information in cases of emergency. While groups continue to be a FREE service, this year, we will NOT allow children into groups if they are not signed up on the youth website.

Please go to http://youth.cas-stamford.org/home/group-signup and do it now!

Introducing a new feature-meet the leaders of our various youth groups!

Meet Our Fabulous Leaders

this week's featured leaders:

Tot Shabbat

Morah Irene Okun

Hi, my name is Irene Okun and I'm happy to say that I will leading Tot Shabbat this year.  For the past two years I have been leading this group.  We have a great time singing, dancing and celebrating Shabbat together with making all the blessings and drinking grape juice and eating challah rolls. I look forward  to seeing everyone on Shabbat.

Morah Debbie Berger

Hi, I'm Morah Debbie and I've been helping to run the Tot Shabbat class for the past 2 years. I have watched your children grow, play, sing, and daven. What a wonderful time we have. I have lived in Stamford for the past 25 years, and am lucky to be raising two teenage boys. I am a teacher at a nursery school in Greenwich during the week, working with 4-5 year old children. I also teach Jewish Studies at another temple in Mt. Kisco. As well, I help my husband at Kids Home Furnishings, a childrens' furniture store. Remember Sol's! When I do have a quiet moment, I enjoy taking walks with my dog.

Mini Minyan

Morah Sara Malka Cohen

I am currently a senior at Stern college for women and majoring in biology. As the oldest of 6 girls, I have experience with children. Additionally, I was a counselor for young children at camp Gan Israel of Greenwich for 6 years. Last year, I had a great year leading the B'nai Mitzvah Club. I look forward to leading Mini Minyan this year with Naama.

I hope to create a fun atmosphere where the children will learn to love Torah and Judaism.

Morah Naama Herstic

Hi, I'm Naama Herstic. I grew up in New Rochelle, NY. I graduated from Westchester Hebrew High School, followed by a year of study in Israel at Midreshet Moriah. I am currently majoring in Graphic Design at Lander College for Women, a division of Touro College. I am also an advisor for NY NCSY and work part- time at a pre-nursery called "Poppyseed." I am looking forward to enhancing the shul experience for the children and teens of Agudath Sholom. It is very exciting to be a part of the CAS community and I can't wait to meet you!
