Shabbat Shalom
Faith in Song

This Shabbat is entitled Shabbat Shira. It is based on the Shira, the song that was sung by the Jewish people upon emerging from the Red Sea. They witnessed God's hand and their salvation and broke out in utter joy and exultation.

Why is a song an expression of their joy?

On one level, we can all appreciate that singing is one of the deepest reflections of our feeling that all is right in the world. We have all experienced moments of such joy, sometimes emerging from a turnabout in our lives when all seemed lost and then things change for the better. The good news is so stirring that it opens up a wellspring of emotion and our natural reaction is to sing and rejoice. This is clearly one of the roots of the Az Yashir, the song the Jews sang upon emerging from the sea.

On another level, though, a song is an expression of faith. Often we experience moments in our lives when we cannot understand why something is happening to us. We struggle to find meaning and purpose in a challenging time.

However, in hindsight, we realize that when one door was closing and all seemed lost, another door was opening. God was laying the foundations for a better future and possible redemption.

Faith is about having the courage to recognize that God has a higher plan that we may not know now and believing that ultimately this difficult event is in sync with a larger Divine plan. Music exemplifies this perspective on life. One note by itself does not make a song. Independently, it is out of place. When the notes are strung together to a score, they can make the most sublime music. In these moments, we realize that the notes are part of a larger Divine melody and singing becomes an expression of the joy in knowing that God was always by our side.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and God willing an immediate return of the hostages, victory and peace speedily and in our days ahead,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Israel Updates
Remembering the Fallen IDF Soldiers Every week, we read the names of the IDF soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the state and people of Israel. Reading the fallen names takes them out of their uniformed headshots into the plainclothes lives they led, with families and professions and hobbies and all that makes us who we are. It brings the fallen nearer, making them a little more real and making the loss all the more profound. May God grant their families and friends much comfort and strength and their legacy will live on always.
Meaningful Idea to Support Families in Israel  Every expression of support for our brothers and sisters makes a difference. The MEALuim Project easily enables communities and individuals to send a weeknight meal to families whose parents are serving in the IDF. One less meal to prepare each week lightens the parents' heavy loads, brings smiles to the faces of children and reminds Israeli families that they have friends – even very far away – who want to do what they can to share the burden.

Become a neighbor across the ocean—simply choose the size of the family and how many weeks you want to send a delicious meal. Register with our community. If your family is joining, please email me as well (rabbicohen@cas-stamford.org) so we can acknowledge your participation.

  • Minyan Honor Roll  We are thrilled to launch our Minyan Honor Roll. In an effort to strengthen the heartbeat of the shul, the daily minyan, we would like men and women to commit to a minimum of one weekday minyan - Shacharit (6:30AM or 7:30 AM) or Mincha/Maariv. In particular, during this time of war, we should never underestimate the power of communal prayer to make a difference. To identify a soldier to keep in mind, please click here. We will be publicly recognizing all who are joining this initiative in the coming weeks. Thank you very much! To join, please email Rabbi Kurtz the weekly minyan you plan to attend: rabbikurtz@cas-stamford.org

We are excited to welcome the group to the sanctuary service for special Shabbat morning for all, and NCSY's own Kabbalat Shabbat, Seudah Shlishit and Havdala - absolute staples of the ruach experience - will be open to all who are interested. Additionally, NCSY is looking for hosts in the community to accommodate out-of-town guests for Friday night and Saturday night.
