The Passing of Senator Joseph Lieberman
Our entire CAS family mourns the passing of Senator Joseph Lieberman. Our shul, community, city, country, Israel, the Jewish people and the world are truly heartbroken on the passing of a remarkable human being, a man devoted to family and faith, a stranger to no one, a hero, a Lamplighter and a modern day embodiment of the biblical Joseph. We wish Hadassah and the entire family so much strength, comfort and love. Senator Lieberman is and will be a beacon of light for all generations and may his memory be for a blessing.

From One Mitzvah Fire to the IDF BBQ Fire

I am always inspired when a momentary decision to do a mitzvah ignites eternal light. Unlike the decision of the body which yields temporary pleasure, choosing to elevate a moment via mitzvah generates real joy and fuels even more meaningful moments.

A case in point occurred this past Tuesday when I landed in Israel to visit our newest granddaughter Yakira. I had been in touch with Noa Haron, daughter of Meg and Yoav, who is spending her gap year at Bar Ilan. To her credit, in the wake of October 7th, she and a few friends are spearheading BBQs for Israeli soldiers to lift their spirits. It is a beautiful and meaningful initiative! To learn more visit click here

As I arrived in Jerusalem, Noa called from an IDF base and told me she double booked BBQs for Wednesday and asked if Agudath Sholom could host one and whether Diane and I could join with some of our Stamford youth. In the spirit of seizing the mitzvah moment, I said yes!

On Wednesday, we raised the funds and hosted a BBQ for over 300 soldiers at Zikim camp right outside of Gaza. With the help of Shimon and the Burger Brigade, we prepared the meals and uplifted the spirits of the soldiers who expressed sincere gratitude for our kindness, time and presence. It was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. click here for photos.

It all began by seizing the moment. In essence this attitude towards life is rooted in the timing of the BBQ. Following Purim, we begin reviewing the laws of Pesach. One of the most important principles is reflected in the difference between matzah and chametz. A minute delay in baking can transform matzah into Chametz. The Talmud derives the lesson - a Mitzvah that comes into your hand, do not let it become chametz. Thank you Noa for inspiring us to seize the mitzvah - the soldiers' smiles and renewed spirits will reverberate in all our hearts and minds forever. If you would like to consider supporting and/or attending an upcoming BBQ be in touch.

With prayers for our brothers and sisters in Israel, speedy return of the hostages and good news ahead. Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

  • What's something that gets you fired up (v'haeish al hamizbeach tukad bo)?
  • Describe a time you started something new. How were you inaugurated and how long did it feel until you had fully stepped into the position (Aharon is inaugurated over 7 days)?
  • How do your clothes affect your avodas Hashem (Moshe places the priestly garments on Aharon and his sons so that they could serve in the Mishkan)?

Thank you  to Gavi Adler, Chaim Bergman, Yoel Maya, Eli Reichner, Nat Samberg and Sam Sroka for leining Megillah this year - and to Matt Greenberg and Jason Levine for lending their megillah scrolls.

Pesach Q and A

Rabbi Cohen and Rabbi Kurtz manage the CAS Pesach WhatsApp Q and A. It is a great way to learn about Kashrut and Kashering for the upcoming holiday. click here to join.

Here is a sample question:

May I use my year round hot water urn for Pesach?

Urn only used for heating water:

Run hot water through the water tap for 10 seconds, while pouring boiling water from a kettle over the water tap.

Urn also used to warm food (e.g. to warm challah):

Must be put away and not used for the Pesach.

Israel MEALuim Update - Our Support Matters!  To Join the Mitzvah, visit https://tzohar-eng.org/mealuim/

Rabbi Cohen-- Your community's participation in MEALuim has made a significant difference in the lives of IDF miluim families. Especially now, as the war has extended into almost 4 months, the absence of a spouse and parent is even more profound and difficult. The homefront has become one of the more important places where we need to place our support. Overall we have thus far provided over 5000 meals to hundreds of families.Using Tzohar's strong connection we have been able to identify and serve those most affected by their soldier's absence and with limited local support. We have focused on ten yishuvim, and sporadic individual families.15 Agudath Sholom Congregation members participated thus far, donating 418 meals. The recipients of these meals were primarily families in Katamonim Jerusalem, an area with many young men in miluim. Yasher Koach!! Please deepen and expand the support!
