Shabbat Shalom
In a Second

One word we recite every month encapsulates the essence of being a Jew.

During the prayer for the new month which we will recite this Shabbat, whenever we mention the first appearance of the new moon in Jerusalem, we identify the time based on the hour, minute and chelek of the day. The Hebrew word chelek means a portion. An hour is divided into 1080 chalakim and one chelek is 3.5 seconds.

Why does Judaism give a name to 3.5 seconds? Why are they significant?

Rabbi Aharon Soloveitchik, of blessed memory, explains that it reflects the sacredness of time. Not only can a minute make a difference, but even a few seconds. It is no surprise that the very first mitzvah God commands the Jewish people as a nation is to sanctify time.

This Shabbat, Parshat Hachodesh, God tells Moshe, "This month is for you the first of all months." God is not only establishing the cycle of the Jewish calendar based on the moon, but making a profound statement about our relationship to time.

Slaves cannot choose how to use time. As free people, the Jewish people are now charged with the gift of elevating every moment. Time can be harnessed or wasted - it is in our hands.

Every minute, second or even millisecond counts. Life, as we know, can change in an instant. Ask yourself on a daily basis, "What will I do today that is worthy of future memory? Pause when you are speaking to someone and ask yourself "How can I make the person feel better about themselves than when we began our conversation?"

It is no wonder the Sages teach that every person possesses a chelek, a portion, in the world to come. Every minute and every second can be elevated and eternalized. It is the secret of life.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and God willing good news from Israel in the days ahead,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Yesh Tikvah Shabbat
I wanted to take a moment to share that Yesh Tikva's 9th annual Infertility Awareness Shabbat is this coming Shabbat. This is a special weekend dedicated to creating a supportive space for those struggling with infertility or facing family-building challenges.

The Stamford community has participated in the past, and the feedback following this special Shabbat was that it helped people feel seen and valued, and that their pain matters.

I encourage everyone to join the One Candle initiative this Friday night and always. It is a beautiful and meaningful initiative to deepen our prayers for people experiencing infertility in the hopes that God willing, God will answer the prayers of those struggling to conceive. Sign up at yeshtikva.org/onecandle/. We will also be adding the prayer for infertility on Shabbat morning.

Rabbi Cohen and Rabbi Kurtz manage the CAS Pesach WhatsApp Q and A. It is a great way to learn about Kashrut and Kashering for the upcoming holiday. click here to join.

Here is a sample question:

May I use my year round hot water urn for Pesach?

Urn only used for heating water:

Run hot water through the water tap for 10 seconds, while pouring boiling water from a kettle over the water tap.

Urn also used to warm food (e.g. to warm challah):

Must be put away and not used for the Pesach.
