Expressing Gratitude to a Halachic Giant in our Generation

These past weeks have been challenging on many levels and, God willing, we will see healing in our community and for humanity in the days ahead. As a Rabbi, I want to take a moment to express my eternal gratitude to a mentor and guide to me, my peers and the Orthodox community over the years. We are fortunate to live in a generation with Rabbi Hershel Schachter.

During this crisis, there have been so many Halachic and human questions with new realities never before experienced. The foundation of Jewish life is rooted in seeing Halacha as both timely and timeless and Rav Schachter's guidance has been invaluable to my peers and me. Halacha is not about bending God's will to our will. Sometimes we understand a psak, a Halachic decision, and sometimes not, but Rabbi Schachter has instilled these times with a rootedness in Torah, empathy and relevancy.

He has written a flurry of new responsa. I and so many are grateful that our generation has the gift of Rav Schachter's genius mind, broad shoulders and sensitive heart. He has barely slept as he has been fielding life and death questions, bearing awesome responsibility to guide us halachically through this crisis. We all owe him and his son Rav Shay, who has been translating and distributing these responsa, a great debt.

May Hashem bless him with length of days and years. We are eternally indebted for his leadership, humanity and wisdom.

Wishing you and your family a Shabbat Shalom and good news in the days ahead.

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

10 Updated Tips for Shabbat
  1. Reach out to someone older or under quarantine. Let them know that they are not alone and that you are thinking of them.
  2. Print out a Torah idea today to share at the Shabbat Table. Here are four excellent resources: www.ou.org, www.aish.com, www.chabad.org, www.yutorah.org
  3. Pick up the phone. Think of some of the people you would normally see over Shabbat and speak with them. Join our Making Mitzvah Moments Whats App to mobilize to help people in need.
  4. Sing. Join Ruach and Renewal at 4:30 PM Friday with Rabbi Cohen and Jonathan Cahr on FB Live. Join us for a dial-in Kabbalat Shabbat and sing with us. We'll call in at 7 PM and start promptly at 7:05pm. Please call 605-475-6777 and enter 51122006 when prompted.
  5. If we can't daven together literally, let's at least daven together at the same time. We'll start our davening at home at 9am.
  6. Please recite this special Tefillah for the victims of the coronavirus. Keep those sick people in mind and add any names.
  7. Torah Reading is Shemini Vayikra 9:1- 11:47. Check out this meaningful article on Why Aharon was Chosen?
  8. Haftorah Samuel 2 6:1 - 7:17 One of the main themes is feeling joy in life. Check out Rav Nachman article on joy and this inspiring article about Rav Yaakov Meir Schechter.
  9. Dress for Shabbat. We won't be in shul, but we can still accord Shabbat the dignity and kavod it so richly deserves by dressing as if we were going to shul.
  10. Think about someone you miss seeing in shul. Make a mental note to call him/her after Havdalah.

Send a Virtual Shabbat Shalom! Join our Virtual Shabbat Shalom greetings on Friday to our shul. We may not see each other at Kiddush but we can still wish everyone a Shabbat Shalom! Send a 5-7 second video greeting from your family by 9 PM Thursday of each week to Jake Sigman at jsigman04@gmail.com. We will send out CAS Virtual Shabbat Shalom to the shul on Friday afternoon!
