Shabbat Shalom

I hope you and your families are well. God willing, we will all share a meaningful, joyous and uplifting Chanukah together.

Please join us this Saturday night for a Chanukah Open House at our home and check out the numerous events for the holiday in our Events section below.

Mazal Tov to Greg Waldstreicher on receiving the Harvey Peltz Award and thank you and best wishes to David Gordon for serving so ably as Federation President. They will both be recognized at the annual Federation meeting at 7:30 PM this Monday at Temple Beth El. Click here to register.

One of the fundamental principles of Jewish spiritual life as expressed so succinctly by Rav Nachman of Breslov is Yerida Letzorech Aliyah - descent leads to ascent. Yosef's life is filled with peaks and valleys and growth in the moments of greatest despair embodies this idea. In other words, it's possible for a person to achieve deeper spiritual insights by first falling to a low level than if they had never fallen from the level they were previously on.

While in Israel during Chanukah a few years ago, I learned an idea which reflects another message of Rav Nachmans principle. At the lighting of Rav Nachum Cohen in Jerusalem, he explained the rationale behind a curious law regarding the lighting of the Chanukiah. The halacha states that the ideal location is above 3 tefachim, one foot off the ground and below 10 tefachim (40 inches). Why do we light so close to the ground?

Rav Nachum explained that the law serves as a reminder that only through humility - "lowering ourselves" - can we make room for God in our lives and reignite the Divine within. Only when we diminish our ego, can we see the Divine in others.

We all must model lives of minimal ego and maximal aspirations to reveal the Divine in ourselves, the Jewish people and all humanity.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and Happy Chanukah,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
