Rainbow Living: Walk with God

Learn the message of the rainbow. It is one of the most powerful symbols in the Torah and expresses God's covenant of peace with humanity. Why a rainbow? What is the significance of the variety of colors?

The mystics explain that the colors of the rainbow are representations of God's middot (attributes). The rainbow is the symbol of God's promise not to bring another flood, for by reflecting on and emulating God's attributes, we ensure that another flood will not be necessary.

Character counts. The foundation of Torah is being a mensch and walking in the ways of God in all we do. The rainbow is a timely reminder of the values we should embody and model. Patience, Order, Gratitude, Kindness, Forgiveness. The opportunities are everywhere.

When we walk into shul, do we hold the door for the person behind us?

When we see food on the floor, do we pick it up or walk by?

Do we model the ethics of derech eretz by helping Mark, Elson or Julio keep a clean and orderly shul, simcha room and social hall?

Do we run to "Kiddush" or wait to hear Kiddush and walk slowly to the room? To this end, we will be modeling a new kiddush protocol this week. Kiddush will be made in the social hall when most people arrive inside. We ask people not to take any food until the bracha of Kiddush. A reserved table for seniors will be available with food and it will be hosted by two Youth Derech Eretz ambassadors who will offer to serve food to the seniors from the kiddush. If your child would like to be part of the Derech Eretz Ambassador team this week or in the following weeks, please let me know.

Finally, do we pause to thank God with a bracha before we eat food as consuming without a blessing is tantamount to stealing from God.

Rabbi Chaim Vital explains that middot were not enumerated in the Torah among the commandments because they are the very foundation of all commandments and the Torah itself. One who lacks proper character is deficient in the very essence of humanity.

Noah was criticized because he did not teach the people to know God through contemplation of His middot and to walk in His ways. He failed to correct and develop the people's character traits. Hence, he was unsuccessful.

However, God chooses Avraham as the progenitor of the Jewish people: "For I know that he will command his children and household after him that they will keep God's way, doing charity and justice." (Genesis 18:19).

God knew that Abraham would direct his descendants in derech Hashem - the path of attributes that leads to a life of Torah.

Emulate the colors in the rainbow. Walk in God's ways. Model a life of Derech Eretz.

God willing, we will merit open miracles in Israel in the days ahead and a full redemption speedily in our days.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and happy Rosh Chodesh,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

A Message from Nathan H. (CAS Member and IDF Soldier) to Agudath Sholom and the Stamford Jewish Community
Dear Rabbi Cohen,

I wanted to reach out to express my heartfelt gratitude for your recent efforts to honor the families of IDF soldiers over the chag. Your support, and the support of the entire Stamford community, truly strengthens us, reminding us that the Jewish community stands firmly behind us.

On a personal note, I have been fighting in Lebanon for the past month. Not only have we uncovered weapons and ammunition hidden within most of the homes, but we've also found symbols of antisemitism, such as Nazi flags and statues of Hitler. Moments like these reinforce my belief that this is not only a war over Israel but a fight for the continuation of the Jewish people.

As we prepare to go back in, I feel strong knowing there is so much support from home. Thank you again for your encouragement and dedication.
With deep appreciation,
Nathan

P.S.: I am attaching a video of the speech that the Rabbi of my Battalion gave Erev Rosh Hashanah, as we stood on the border about to cross in for the first time. Have a listen

From Darkness to Light - Rosh Hashanah 5785
Rosh Hashanah Sermon

We are Sandy and we are Art. Like Sandy, faced with darkness, we need to renew our strength and resolve. Like Art, we must fuel small gestures of friendship to fortify each other's faith and infuse the world with light.

Ari faced his own darkness. What would he choose? He had every excuse to give up. To Ari's eternal credit, he chose life. So must we.

Changing Ourselves - Yom Kippur 5785
Yom Kippur Sermon

Yom Kippur is not about changing God but about changing ourselves. How do we see each other? Do we mine for gold or dig for the dirt?

Whether in our country, Israel, within our families, let us remember what unites us. We are one nation under God and one family as a Jewish people with one heart. If we are united, no power on earth can prevail over us.
