Shabbat Shalom Climbing the Mountain a Second Time: In Tribute to Rabbi Joseph Ehrenkranz This coming week marks the second Yaarzeit of our beloved Rabbi Joseph Ehrenkranz. Our shul is eternally grateful for his leadership of over a half century. When reflecting on his legacy, I think about one of the most important messages in the Torah portion of Ki Tisa, the meaning of Moshe's second ascent on Mt. Sinai. It is more inspiring than the first. When he climbed the first time to receive the Torah he was filled with spiritual euphoria and optimism. The second ascent required tenacity, persistence and hope. Moshe discovered and we are awakened to our capacity not to give up nor despair but dig deep to climb the mountains of our lives a second time. Rabbi Joe never stopped climbing the mountain. Here are some words I shared at his funeral. "He possessed an infectious love of life and a positive joyous spirit. Every day he desired to accomplish more, to learn more, to help more, and to grow. His soul was not at peace if he could not be expanding the reach of his soul in the world. When God placed the soul of Rabbi Joe, Yosef Yehuda in his body 87 years ago, he gave him a special and holy mission. Arriving in Stamford as a young rabbi in his mid twenties with a dream, he transformed our reality. He taught us, he loved us, he laughed with us, he cried with us, he listened to us, he danced with us and he dreamed with us. He intuitively understood that life has purpose. He reminded us that each one of us graces this world with the responsibility to be kind, be ethical, live life fully and leave hundreds of imprints every day." Do we aspire or retire? Do we wait for external inspiration or do we discover the passion within? Rabbi Joe's spirit grows and remains eternal because he lived his life seeking to make it a masterpiece every day. May his memory be for a blessing. On the occasion of his yaarzeit, we will be launching our second Beit Midrash program of the year on three Thursday evenings March 3, 10 and 17th from 9 PM - 10 PM at the shul. We will start with a brief tribute to his memory at the first session. Small learning groups will be led by Rabbi Daniel Cohen, Rabbi David Walk, Mark Wagschul and Rabbi Dr. Jeff Cahn on topics of prayer, Purim, Torah and ethics. Maariv will follow the program at 10 PM. Of course, single malt scotch and cholent will be served. We are excited to announce the start of a 7 AM Shabbat minyan at CAS beginning March 12. This minyan was requested by our members and will be held in addition to our 8 AM and 9 AM services. We welcome Rabbi Mordechai Harris and his wife Nisa who will join us this Shabbat and look forward to a wonderful Shabbat together. Welcome Rabbi Mordechai Harris, Assistant Rabbi Candidate - This Shabbat we will host Rabbi Mordechai Harris, candidate for our Assistant Rabbi. Rabbi Harris will speak Friday night, around 5:30 pm between Mincha and Ma'ariv, and at both services Saturday morning. We will host a community-wide "meet and greet" tea at CAS on Saturday afternoon at 4:45 pm. Rabbi Harris will give a class at Seudat Shlishit, around 5:30 pm. We will send out a brief survey Saturday night requesting your feedback about Rabbi Harris as a candidate for our Assistant Rabbi. Please respond promptly.
- Rabbi Mordechai Harris's work in informal and experiential Jewish education has spanned fifteen years while traversing ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Prior to receiving Smicha he held positions as the Youth Rabbi at the Hebrew Institute of White Plains, the Associate Regional Director for Upstate New York NCSY, JLIC Educator on the campus of SUNY Albany, and as the Site Director for Keshet's special needs integration program at Camp Moshava, Wildrose. Upon receiving Smicha from Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, Rabbi Harris assumed the role of Teen Rabbi and Outreach Director at Baron Hirsch Congregation in Memphis, Tennessee while also serving on the Judaic Studies faculty for the local community day school.

Rabbi Cohen's Halacha Question of the Week - Warming Food on Shabbat - Question: There has been much discussion regarding warming drawers per your note in last week's bulletin. The question came up as to how a warming drawer differs from the use of an oven that is set under 200 degrees. Most warming drawers vary in temperature up to 225 degrees per the Sears website. Can you please let me know how this differs from leaving your oven temperature under 200 degrees for the same use?
- Answer: There is a distinction in halacha between an item designed for warming only and one which is primarily an item used for baking but now on a warming temperature. The halacha states that an item primarily used for baking, such as an oven, creates the issue of michzi kemevashel - the appearance of cooking - when a person puts in food on Shabbat. Also, the concept of a Shabbat mode creates confusion in this regard. People assume that this mode allows a person to put cold solid pre-cooked food in on Shabbat, but it does not. There may be al mi lesimoch in certain cases where the food is left in at onset of Shabbat and then put back in Shabbat morning (an extended chazara) but this is not accepted by most authorities. I will discuss the concept of a Shabbat mode oven next week.

CAS Youth | This weekend.... · NCSY Winter Regional - have a great time to the over 25 teens that are going · Breakfast with leaders for BMC - 10 am · PANOPLY Saturday night 8 pm Shabbat Morning Group Schedule and Leaders: Tot Shabbat (ages birth-4) will meet in the youth classroom at 10:30 with Morahs Irene, Danielle and Simone! Mini Minyan (ages 4-grade 1) will meet in the youth classroom at 10:30 with Morah Debbie and Morah Talia! Jr. Cong. (grades 2-4) will meet in the Chapel at 10:30 with Rabbi Jeiger and Nicole Wohlberg! B'nai Mitzvah Club (grades 5-6) will meet with Chaim Helman by the elevator at 10:00 for breakfast.
