What are the first words recited when we begin to daven? According to Rabbi Isaac Luria, we affirm the mitzvah of loving our neighbors as ourselves. What is the rationale? Is not prayer an expression of our love of G-d? Perhaps the tradition offers a stark reminder of the dignity and decorum required during tefillah. Imagine how it would feel if someone spoke with a friend while we recited kaddish for a parent or prayed for the speedy recovery of a child? Imagine how it would feel if our son was reading the Torah and others were oblivious? It is difficult for us to truly perceive G-d's presence in the room but we do see our friends and community.

May we possess the courage to be silent during the "pauses' in prayer and G-d willing, unlock new reservoirs of concentration in our Tefillah.

WOMAN'S SCHOLAR SERIES WITH MIRIAM KRUPKA

February-March

Join us for a five class series on the five Megillot. Each class will analyze one Megillah's religious themes, literary structures, philosophical elements and methodologies, as well as an overview and comparison of the books as a whole. Ms. Miriam Krupka has taught Tanakh/Biblical Studies for six years at the Ramaz Upper School.

Women and men are welcome to attend

Dates: February 22 and 29, and on March 14, 21 and 28 at 8 P.M.

The charge for the five part series is $50 per person and $75 per couple.

Results from the First Annual Havdalah Hoops Father/Son 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament

The event started at 6:30 with a Havdalah ceremony performed by Steven Cohen. The teams played against other father/son teams at the JCC. The tournament included 37 players in 9 teams representing 13 families. Each team played 4 games to determine seeding; each game was played to 11 points. After all 9 teams played their 4 games, we held a playoff-style game where the top seeds played the bottom seeds. Two teams remained after the playoff- the Frenkel/Wohlberg team vs. the Yaghoubian family. The Frenkel/Wohlberg family won the championship game 11-0 and took home the championship! We look forward to holding the tournament as an annual event!

TEEN ADVOCACY FELLOWSHIPS FOR ISRAEL:

A SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY

Be one of four teens to be selected for a free trip to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee Policy Conference, March 4-6 in Washington, DC. The trip will include registration, travel and hotel and the winners will join the Agudath Sholom AIPAC delegation. To be one of the four selected: Submit in a 500 word essay- "WHY DOES AIPAC NEED YOU?" If you could lobby to the members of Congress on Capitol Hill, what would you say? What case would you present about the issues affecting the United States and Israel? Essays will be evaluated by local and national panel of AIPAC supporters. Submit to Rabbi Cohen by Friday

From what I'm told (this could be apocryphal), rabbis used to spend most of their time in their offices or synagogue libraries; you always knew where to find them. Nowadays, we rabbis start our day armed with blackberries or I -phones, and more often than not we are journeying back and forth many times a day from our office to meetings off-site. We can make phone calls from our Bluetooth devices in our cars. We can answer emails while waiting for the elevator. A rabbi's office is still the base of operations, but many times we're out on a mission rather than back on base.

With this in mind, I'm pleased to introduce a reliable way for members of our shul to touch base with me in person during all of our busy work weeks:
