Message
On Saturday night, we will launch the High Holiday season with a program Sparks of Growth and Inspiration at 9 PM.
Have you ever read a poem or book, seen a movie or work of art, or heard a song that awakened within you the voice of God beckoning you to become a better you? Our clergy will be joined by some members of our community who will also share their sources of inspiration. We never know what experience will awaken us from our spiritual slumber and motivate us to grow in our relationship to humanity and God.
One of the most moving poems I ever read, "Renascence" by Edna St. Vincent Millay, encapsulates living inspired. The narrator complains that the world is so small, so restricting, and so filled with pain, suffering, and evil. She laments that there is no hunger she does not herself experience. Unable to cope with the pain, the poet begs G-d to take her from this world, and she soon finds herself lying peacefully in a grave. Here, a full six feet underground, she is finally free from the travails and pains of life.
Suddenly, the rain begins to fall and she hears raindrops pattering on her roof. She suddenly seems to love the sound far more than ever. She writes, "for rain it hath a friendly sound to one who's six feet underground." From her grave, the poet hopes she can once more see the rain and smell the fresh and fragrant breeze that appears from the drenched and dripping apple trees.
Suddenly, a great thunderstorm strikes the grave and she senses a fragrance that only a living thing can sense. She exclaims, "I know not how such things can be; I breathed my soul back into me." Jumping up from the ground she hugs the trees and proclaims: "God, I can push the grass apart, And lay my finger on Thy heart."
Edna St. Vincent Millay was only 25 years old when she wrote this most inspiring religious poem. For most of us, life-altering events generate an awakening. A baby is born, a couple is wed, someone close to us dies, we celebrate another milestone, or we survive a brush with death. However, life is not intended to be lived this way. Imagine how glorious our lives would be if we savored every moment.
The Torah portion of Ki Tavo reminds us to rejoice in all the blessings bestowed on us by God. When we live in amazement, every moment is fresh and infused with infinite potential. Join us this Saturday night and on Sunday morning for our sunrise service on the sound at 6:20 AM at the Stamford Cove. Divine sparks abound. Seize them this holiday season and be inspired!
Wishing you and your families a Ketivah VeChatimah Tovah, a happy, healthy and sweet new year and a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
Rabbi Cohen's Shabbat Challenge Thank the Police officer on duty when you arrive in shul and tell me his name at the Kiddush.

Introducing the Shabbat Atria Mitzvah Mission Spreading joy and building community reflects the values of our shul. Our clergy periodically leads pre-Shabbat Friday afternoon programs at Atria Stamford, 77 3rd Street. This year, we are stepping it up and launching the Stamford Atria Mitzvah Mission. The goal of the Mitzvah mission is to enrich the seniors' experience through friendship, song and joy. Join me and Kate & Peretz Cik on Friday, September 30th at 2:30 PM to share the spirit of Shabbat. Whether adults or kids, your presence will enhance the ambiance and ruach. Let me know if you would like to join the Atria Mitzvah mission. Thank you!
Exciting News
We are pleased to announce the retention of Dena Block as a Yoetzet Halacha for the coming year. We are grateful to an anonymous donor for supporting the program.
What is a Yoetzet Halacha?
A yoetzet is a woman educated extensively in the laws of niddah, Jewish family law. Her education also includes other areas that come up when helping women keep the laws of niddah, specifically, medical and psychological issues--for example, fertility and infertility, menopause, pregnancy, nursing, breastfeeding, PPD and contraception.
Nishmat, an institution of higher women's learning in Jerusalem, established the Kerel Ariel Yoetzet Halacha training program in 1997 in Israel. Dena Block is part of the first group to be trained by Nishmat in America. Dena will be working in partnership with Rabbis Cohen and Zweiter and the Minnie Manger Marcia Leiberman Mikvah committee to help women and families in the Stamford Jewish community.
Dena will be offering two classes during the year and will be "on call" for any questions or guidance. Women are invited on Sunday morning October 30th from 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM at Agudath Sholom for a refresher on the philosophy and laws of Taharat Hamishpacha and a Q and A which will be done in a way that questions remain anonymous. God willing, the Yoetzet Halacha initiative will be source of blessing in our community. Dena can be reached at blockdena@gmail.com or 201 921 8992.

Wolfsohn Lecture: My Journey from Radical Islamist to Religious Zionist
Kasim Hafeez is a British citizen of Pakistani Muslim heritage. Growing up in a predominantly Muslim community in the United Kingdom, from a young age he was exposed to radical Anti-Western, Anti-Semitic and Anti-Israel ideas on a daily basis. In his teenage years he made a natural progression towards a more radical Islamist ideology, becoming very active in the Anti-Israel movement, calling for Israel's destruction and delegitimizing its existence on campus and beyond. After coming across Alan Dershowitz's book 'The Case for Israel', a book that challenged his fundamental beliefs, Hafeez began a period of research and reflection that led to him visiting Israel for the first time in 2007. Witnessing the true nature of the Jewish state, was a major turning point in his life and changed his perception of Israel forever.

Join Rabbi Cohen and other pre-Bar Mitzvah fathers and seventh grade boys to discuss what our tradition teaches us about becoming a man. Each session will cover a unique aspect of a Bar Mitzvah's new responsibilities in the world, and Rabbi Cohen will bring relevant sources to stimulate discussion. The three topics will be: (1) who am I, and what are my responsibilities as an individual? (2) who am I, and what are my responsibilities in my family? (3) who am I, and what are my responsibilities in my local community, Jewish people and the world? This is a great opportunity for fathers and sons to bond and grow in preparation for their Bnai Mitzvah.
