Shabbat Shalom Walking in Jerusalem and Walking for Jerusalem This Sunday, the 28th of Iyar, is Yom Yerushalayim and we celebrate the reunification of Jerusalem in 1967. For thousands of years, we prayed to return to our capital, our home, and through the hand of God, we realized our dream. In the years following the Six Day War, Jews worldwide and the nations of the world, recognized the modern miracle. The passion was high. Thousands made aliyah and moved to Israel. Not out of fear but out of pride and destiny. When I was studying in Israel in 1990, I remember one of my mentors, Rabbi Aaron Rakeffet, our guest this Shavout, sharing with us a perspective on our commitment to Israel. We should not sleep peacefully at night without thinking about our hopes of moving to Israel or doing whatever can to support Israel. Evoking the words of this week's Parsha in which God states we will return to Israel "upright", he told us - "Do not wait until you are running to Israel out of fear but come upright, come with pride and do whatever you can to support her." Whether the year 1967 or 2015, our gratitude must be deep and our passion for Jerusalem must remain high. 48 years later, do we still "walk for Jerusalem"? Do we sleep fitfully at night or do we ask ourselves what can we do to further the dreams of our people? One of my most moving memories was celebrating Jerusalem Day in 1986 as we danced from Yeshivat Mercaz Harav Kook until the Western Wall. To this day, I cannot forget singing through the streets of Jerusalem shoulder to shoulder with our nation and the song in my soul as we arrived at the Kotel. For the rest of my life, when I walk the streets of Jerusalem I know I am home. We are living in historic times. Our actions will determine the future of Israel. Me and You. Visit Israel this summer. We will recite Hallel in praise of the miracle. Let us not take the events of 1967 for granted. Let us walk with pride and purpose in Jerusalem and for Jerusalem. As Isaiah proclaimed, "For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not remain quiet, till her vindication shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch." | Fairway Update Thank you to everyone for your constructive suggestions for Fairway. Your voices were heard! I am happy to announce that in the beginning of June, the kosher butcher will return to the Fairway Market. I am grateful to Fairway management for their reconsideration. We hope with your help, the reopening will be a win win for Fairway and the kosher consumer community. Here are the details. The butcher and mashgiach will be present three days a week - likely Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. The store will also be reverting back to the original meat supplier Teva and not Shor Habor which is currently being used. Refrigerated rotisserie chickens will be available daily.
I will remain in close contact with company management during the next few months as they evaluate the success of kosher meat market. Please be in touch if you have ongoing suggestions and most importantly, please do your best to support the store in the weeks and months ahead.
G-d willing, together we will insure the growth of kashrut in our community for many years ahead. |

- INTRODUCING THE BACK TO SCHOOL SHOP, a UJF program that provides economically disadvantaged elementary school children in Stamford with new clothes (pants, shirt, sneakers, socks, underwear, winter coat, hat, gloves) backpack and school supplies. Children get to pick out their own new items in a "shopping" environment created in a local school prior to the start of the new school year, while their parents visit the Japha Family Resource Center to receive basic health screenings and information about vital community services. DISTRIBUTIONS FROM THE JFS KOSHER FOOD PANTRY HAVE INCREASED BY MORE THAN 1000 since the recession. With this tremendous upsurge in use, JFS is constantly challenged to keep the food pantry full. Your generosity enables JFS to help those in our community in their greatest moments of need.
- LINKING GENERATIONS OF THE SHOAH-Our 2nd Generation Group began in July 2012. We are a group of approximately fifty members ranging in age from 40 and up and we come from all over CT and Westchester County. Our monthly meetings take place in Westport, CT (usually at the UJA offices) every second Tuesday of the month. Spouses of 2G members as well as 3rd Generation often attend our general meetings.
